Spotlight Series: Introducing Blake Webster

Blake Webster didn’t set out to become a leader in agricultural research but somewhere along the way, a shift in curiosity changed everything.

As a college student, Blake began his academic career focused on studying human biology. But over time, his interest gravitated toward plants, their interactions, and the complex, often invisible forces that shape how they grow. That curiosity led him to pursue a master’s degree in Plant Pathology at the University of Minnesota, which he completed in 2016. From there, he stepped into the seed industry, working in seed research and development for a major agricultural company in central Iowa.

It was there, working closely with plant systems at a microscopic level, that Blake began to see the bigger picture. What started as a focus on plant pathology gradually expanded into a broader fascination with agricultural systems as a whole. When he returned to the University of Minnesota in 2020 to join the Rosemount Research and Outreach Center (RROC) as Agricultural Research and Production Manager, he brought with him both technical expertise and a growing passion for field-scale innovation. In 2023, he stepped into the role of Director.

Blake often describes his journey as one of increasing scale, moving from studying agriculture under a microscope to leading research across hundreds of acres. But at its core, his work is still driven by the same sense of curiosity that first drew him to plant science.

“Every farmer and gardener I know is an experimenter,” he says. That mindset continues to shape how he approaches his role today. At the RROC, Blake oversees a wide range of research initiatives designed to test new agricultural practices, products, and technologies in real-world conditions. The center serves as a bridge between research and application, where ideas are not only explored but put into practice.

One of the projects he points to is the camelina program, a model of how research can move from concept to market. Through collaborations with plant breeders, industry partners, and public stakeholders, the program demonstrates how a new crop can be developed, tested, scaled, and ultimately adopted. For Blake, it’s a powerful example of what makes the RROC unique: the ability to support the full lifecycle of agricultural innovation in one place.

But while the research is critical, Blake is quick to emphasize that the people are what make the work meaningful. Since becoming Director, he has found the most rewarding part of his role to be the relationships he’s built with researchers, students, staff, and the broader community. He describes the RROC team as highly skilled, deeply committed, and central to the center’s success.

That collaborative spirit extends beyond the staff. Blake sees the RROC as a place where farmers can observe new ideas in action, where students gain hands-on experience that shapes their future, and where the broader community can engage with agriculture in a meaningful way. Positioned at the intersection of rural and suburban life, the center plays a unique role in connecting people to the land and to each other.

Looking ahead, Blake is energized by the constant evolution of the work. Each year brings new research programs, new students, and new partnerships. He’s particularly excited about an upcoming initiative funded by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources, which will explore how precision agriculture technologies can be used to support both economic and environmental outcomes.

For Blake, the future of the RROC is rooted in exploration, continuing to ask questions, test ideas, and expand the boundaries of what agricultural research can achieve. From microscopic plant interactions to the complexity of whole agricultural systems, his work reflects a deep belief that innovation begins with curiosity and grows through collaboration. At the Rosemount Research and Outreach Center, that belief takes root every day in the fields, in the partnerships, and in the people.
