Field Day Highlights Potential of Perennial Flax as a Multi-Use Crop

June 04, 2025

On June 3, 2025, a field day event showcased ongoing research into perennial flax, a promising new crop being developed through the University of Minnesota’s Forever Green Initiative (FGI) and the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI). Attendees explored active research plots and heard directly from scientists and industry experts about the potential of this emerging perennial oilseed. This is just one of the many research projects hosted at the Rosemount Research and Outreach Center (RROC), solidifying the RROC’s place as a leader in agricultural research.

Perennial flax is being designed to integrate with conventional farming systems, offering a variety of benefits. These include extended flowering periods that support pollinators, the potential for two harvests per growing season—fiber or florals first, followed by seeds—and environmental advantages such as reduced tillage, lower input costs, and enhanced soil health through carbon sequestration.

Specifically, perennial flax can benefit farmers by increasing their marketability. Perennial flax is being developed to allow for two harvests per growing season—one for its fiber or florals, and another for seeds. This could boost on-farm productivity and profitability without the need to plant a second crop. As a perennial crop, it comes back year after year, reducing the need for annual planting, tillage, and some herbicide applications. This means lower labor and input costs over time, along with improved soil structure and carbon sequestration. Unlike some niche crops, perennial flax is being developed to fit within existing agricultural systems, making it easier for farmers to adopt without overhauling their entire operation.

The event offered a platform for discussion around current research, practical applications, and future directions for perennial flax, underscoring its potential as a resilient, value-added crop for the Upper Midwest and beyond. The day highlighted not only the versatility of perennial flax but also the Rosemount Research and Outreach Center’s space and ability to cultivate innovation through real-world field trials and collaborative outreach
